Before babies, I had the ridiculous idea that you generally have one feeling at any point in time. “I love him”, “I hate him”, “This is exciting” or “I’m bored out of my wits”.

Then when you sit and watch a little Lily fascinated with a small jar, filled with felt clover leaves, so fascinated that she spent (at least, I stopped counting) 20 minutes doing the following: open, empty, examine with much concentration if said leaves changed, refill, close, rinse and repeat.

Conflicting feelings arise, pure delight and joy, and utter boredom. All at the same time. It makes sayings like “take it all in” a bit confusing. A part of me can watch her face forever, and another part is thinking “seriously sweety, it is not a twilight zone inside that jar.”
